Our Picks: How we picked the best fully automatic coffee machine

Know all about our top seven fully automatic coffee machines.

1. Features: Most important purchase criteria for a fully automatic coffee machine

1.1 Milk Container, Milk Hose or Steam Nozzle

You can froth your milk in three ways when it comes to a fully automatic coffee machine, and the methods are as follows:

 • A milk container is a feature that sets the degree to which the milk is steamed and how much milk is ultimately poured into the cup. It comes in handy because you need not waste time manually steaming the milk. However, this function calls for proper cleaning of the milk reservoir and the milk line. In some models, this is done by the machine itself after every cup of coffee.

 • A milk hose offers a middle ground between a milk container and a steam nozzle as it extracts the milk right from a separate milk container. However, the hose eventually needs to be cleaned, even if the machine regularly rinses it itself.

 • A steam nozzle gives you maximum control over the amount of milk foam and its density. You choose how much steam is blown through the milk. Also, a steam wand is much easier to clean than a milk container or milk hose.

1.2 Design and Size

When you are purchasing a device as expensive as a fully automatic coffee machine, then besides its functions, the design of the machine also matters. In fact, buyers also attach importance to the size of the machine. A large, fully automatic coffee machine sounds quite impractical both in terms of maintenance and keeping it. Overall, the fully automatic coffee machine must have an excellent shape and design to look good in the kitchen even after years.

1.3 Cup Warmer

You need this feature to preheat your coffee cup. This function comes in very handy if the coffee leaves the machine at the perfect temperature because, in a cold cup, the temperature of coffee will quickly drop.

If there is no cup warmer in your machine, then make the most of the feature where the machine rinses its pipes with hot water during heating. Place the cup under the mouthpiece and collect the hot water in the cup to heat it quickly. It has dual benefits. First, you get a hot cup and second, you have to empty the water collector much less often.

1.4 Pump Pressure

The pump pressure refers to the pressure at which the water flows through the machine to the coffee. The industry-standard pump pressure is around 9 bar, while some professionals prefer 15 bar. High pressure simply means you get a beautiful crema layer on your coffee.

However, the question is whether more pressure is always better. Well, not necessarily because it takes more than just more pressure.

For starters, you need great coffee beans that are adequately ground and pressed together because a loosely packed puck can never withstand water pressure and just lets everything seep through, resulting in watery coffee. Another thing is if you pack it too tight, the machine will not correctly drain its water resulting in repair costs.

So, there is no thumb rule when it comes to selecting the pump pressure of a coffee machine; it’s just that the finer the coffee, the better it is for the pump.

1.5 Brewing Unit

The brewing unit is like the heart of a fully automatic coffee machine, as this is where the water is forced through the freshly ground coffee puck. This is not it. A brew group also collects the ground coffee powder to compress it into a coffee puck, releases the previously firmly anchored puck, and drops it into the coffee grounds container. Without a brewing unit, your machine would be a very expensive kettle with a coffee grinder. So, indeed, a brewing unit is essential for a fully automatic coffee machine. However, we need to decide if it should be a removable or non-removable brewing unit.

It is better to choose a removable brewing unit for it promotes thorough cleaning of the machine. A removable brewing unit is usually made of plastic, and you can simply rinse it under the tap for 100% cleaning. However, for inside cleaning, you’ll need to run a cleaning program on the device itself. The sole reason people avoid buying a removable brewing unit is that it is delicate, and there are chances of breakage. At the same time, a removable brewing unit can be easily replaced if it breaks.

1.6 Water Filter

Water filter is not an essential but good-to-have feature as it filters the dirty water and reduces its hardness. This works the same as a regular filter, which you may already have at home and reduces the water hardness from levels 2 and 3 to approximately 1.

We recommend not to buy a machine with a water filter due to two reasons. One, it increases the price of a machine exponentially and second, whether or not your machine has a water filter, it will still demand to descale.

1.7 Controls, Display and Touchscreen

Outside of a coffee machine matters as much as its inside. The number of settings of a device holds less importance if every function is not intuitive and easy to operate.

Clearly, the more you spend on your coffee machine, the more digitization continues to advance. It includes a touchscreen for selecting settings, trendy and modern ways of operation. But not everyone needs to scroll down to all types of coffee options or setting programs to make a perfect cuppa. Some people prefer simple keys without display and frills.

There are also fully automatic coffee machines that can be controlled via an app. They come with a connection with WiFi or Bluetooth. So, clearly, digitization and remote control are becoming increasingly crucial in fully automatic coffee makers. A coffee machine with an app allows you complete power to operate it from your comfort zone. You can choose the setting of the drinks, turn on the device remotely, directly access the user manual, easily adjust the maintenance and water hardness without getting up.

However, spend wisely because you can’t seek help from an app to put a cup under the machine, fill the water reservoir, or get the milk out of the fridge at the end of the day. Similarly, we believe that it’s unnecessary to pay more for a model with a display if the same device with standard buttons is also available.

1.8 Water Reservoir

Fresh filtered water is the key to good coffee. However, we often hear that a large water reservoir is better. However, that can also mean old water. The water remains stagnant, it stales, losing oxygen, and some substances sink to the bottom. So, a large reservoir is suitable only if you drink lots of coffee daily or have a large group to serve. Anyways, it is recommended to rinse the water tank regularly, let it dry and then refill it. In that respect, a large water tank often causes inconvenience.

It’s true that with more and more models, the water reservoir is dishwasher safe, but yet you will have to put it under the running tap to remove the soap residue thoroughly.

1.9 Double Features

If you wonder how flexible a coffee machine will be if more than one choice is there for coffee beans or more than one style of coffee you drink, you must look for a double feature coffee machine. A fully automatic coffee machine can have any of the following features:

 • A dual bean chamber or container

 • 2-cup function

 • Several individually customizable drink profiles

If there is constant discussion in your households about which beans are the best, then you need a double bean container machine. So, one chamber can be used for beans X and the other for beans Y or maybe for decaffeinated coffee. And it is even better if there are two bean hoppers, each with its own grinder!

The 2-cup function means that 2 cups can be made simultaneously. It proves to be helful when there are multiple coffee drinkers because when two espressos are prepared simultaneously, nobody has to wait long.

The individually adaptable drink profiles refer to saving your own favourite settings. So you can have your favourite drink next time at the push of a button.

1.10 Water Hardness

By adjusting the water hardness, you cannot change the composition of the water. By setting this, your machine will give you timely reminders about descaling. If the water hardness is soft, descaling is rarely required. With a moderate degree of hardness, the device needs regular cleaning. And if the water is quite hard, then descale it often because the harder the water is, the more calcium it contains, and the lime comes off during heating.

In the Netherlands, German water hardness is used. You can also find out the water hardness from your water supply company.

The table will give you a quick view of how often you must descale with German level water hardness.

1.11 Coffee Grinder

A coffee grinder is of prime importance when it comes to making not just the perfect coffee but also latte macchiato or other drinks with milk. Only freshly grounded coffee gives an optimal taste. Regarding the coffee grinder, you must consider three things, i.e. it should provide you finely ground and homogeneously coffee, it produces minimum noise, and since the mill is under the heaviest load and often breaks first – the grinder quality has to be top-notch. Therefore, a built-in grinder can primarily differ in two characteristics - the material and the shape.

Material

Ceramic grinders are preferred for being quieter and due to their non-rusting nature. Also, it scores very high in the field of sustainability.

Steel comes under the lowest price categories. As compared to ceramic, it makes quite some noise. However, it scores well on the chart of sustainability.

Shape

disc mill consists of two superimposed discs that are slightly concave on the inside and touch at the outer edges. The smaller the distance is there between the discs, the finer coffee ground you will get. Moreover, the larger the discs, the faster they can grind. But what is more important is the adjustability of the discs. You can place the discs so close together in some machines that they deliver almost espresso-quality ground coffee.

cone mill consists of two fitting cylinder-shaped parts that take up very little space, and therefore, a cone mill is compact. This type of grinder is usually used in compact coffee machines.

All in all, there is no hard and fast rule as a stainless steel cone mill works just as well as the ceramic disc mill.

1.12 Grinding Degree

The proper grinding degree setting plays a crucial role in making a cup of aromatic and flavourful coffee.

The thumb rule is the finer the coffee ground, the better the espresso is extracted and the tastier the coffee.

However, the number of grinding degree levels vary from machine to machine. Also, the ease with which you can adjust the ground level differs between the different devices. And we think nothing can beat a simple turning wheel.

But unfortunately, the finest settings do not always work well. So, this is a game of hit and trial initially. Furthermore, the number of grinds available usually increases the more you pay for your device. Our suggestion is the key to finer grind is a lower grinding degree number, and therefore, 1 is always the finest grinding level. If you go by this, a machine with a large number of grinding degrees is futile.

1.13 Temperature

Temperature plays a crucial role in preparing that perfect cup of coffee. Too much temperature will burn the coffee, and too low temperature will give you a cold drink.

Some coffee machine allows optimizing the temperature of the brewing process along with the other settings. 90 degrees Celsius is the ideal temperature for an espresso machine. So our advice is to set a temperature between 90 and 94 degrees.

Some models even let you regulate the milk temperature.
There is a fact when it comes to choosing the temperature of the milk, i.e. above 65 degrees Celsius, the flavour profile of the milk changes due to denaturation.
So, this temperature may sound cold to some, yet we recommend not going too far above it to get decent milk foam; otherwise taste of the coffee will change.

1.14 Noise

Noise level can be a determining factor while buying a fully automatic coffee machine. The sound is mainly produced while grinding the beans and brewing espresso.

The sound categories are classified as follows:

 • Relatively quiet - the noise level is up to 65 dB. This is equivalent to normal conversation.

 • Medium - the noise level is 66 to 70 dB. This is equivalent to loud noise from the TV.

 • Noisy - The noise level is 70.1 to 74 dB

1.15 Milk Foam System

A fully automatic coffee machine has cappuccinatore to make the milk foam. It is a smartly placed hose that sucks up milk and froths it with the help of steam. You have two options for the milk: the hose suck milk directly from the milk carton or a supplied container. In either case, the disadvantage is that you cannot make milk drinks such as a cappuccino, latte macchiato by just pressing a button. You will have to move the cup yourself to have milk foam made.

That’s why machine makers try to convince us that a fully built-in system is the ideal solution ensuring frothing milk is handy because you really don’t have to do anything except pour the milk into the reservoir.

With an automatic and built-in milk foam system, milk drinks can actually be prepared by pressing a button.

Another way of producing milk foam is by getting a manual milk frother machine with a steam nozzle. And some people prefer this because you get complete control here, and the steam nozzle can be cleaned by just pressing a button.

The machine can be cleaned with the help of cleaning tablets especially made for coffee machines. Sometimes bags are also provided that throws you directly into the water. These options are used for cleaning the inside of the machine. Cleaning also includes the descaling of the coffee machine. Most machines use a water filter to soften the water and ensure that the coffee has a pure taste. However, this water filter can cost you 20 euros to 100 euros per year.
Some models require additional care like extra coffee oil cleaning and monthly greasing to brew groups.

2.3 What is the difference between a fully automatic coffee machine and an espresso machine?

Although fully automatic machines are often referred to as fully automatic espresso machines but they are two different machines in terms of the brewing process and other associated factors.

In an espresso machine with a portafilter, the water of 90 degrees Celsius is sent through a compressed coffee puck with a water pressure of 9 bar and the coffee is ground very finely to withstand the pressure. Further, a resistance is built up directly in the filter holder, which sits instantly above the cup. This brewing process produces a classic espresso with the crema, the typical foam layer on top of an espresso.

Automated coffee machines imitate this process but not in great detail. For starters, the coffee beans are always ground a little coarser as you do in the French press. The tamped coffee puck is bombarded with water with the necessary pressure, and then the finished coffee goes from the brew group to the outlet through all kinds of hoses. Ultimately devoiding the coffee of that typically espresso crema layer.

2.4 What is the difference between an automatic filter machine and a fully automatic coffee machine?

An automatic filter machine simply means a filter coffee maker with a built-in coffee grinder. This is a smart version of an old-fashioned coffee machine where the beans are freshly ground. Besides this, there’s no pressure, no milk foam, no coffee puck, no espresso. Just good old filter coffee.

The advantage of a filter machine with a grinder compared to a fully automatic coffee machine or an automatic espresso machine is you can brew an entire coffee pot in one go which can be a deciding factor for large families.

All in all, an automatic filter machine will give you an excellent filter coffee and not espresso or latte macchiato or cappuccino.

2.6 Which milk is best for use in a fully automatic coffee machine?

With cow’s milk, you will get decent milk foam irrespective of the fact which fat content you choose.

The thumb rule is the more fat, the creamier and voluminous the foam will be.

With vegetable variants, the ratio of fat and proteins is often not optimal to prepare milk foam. For example, rice milk does not foam up, no matter how hard you try. Whereas some milk just doesn’t;t taste good in foam form. Soy milk is the foam queen of the plant world, but it’s hardly preferred for foam. Similarly, coconut and almond milk work better as a mixture.

2.8 Why cleaning a fully automatic coffee machine is essential?

Yes, it is recommended that if you use a coffee machine every day, you should also clean it daily. The reason behind this is simple, coffee and milk residues are the breeding ground for bacteria. By cleaning, you will leave zero scope for them to be in your machine, but it will also help the machine live a longer life, and the coffee will remain tasty.

A fully automatic coffee machine is like a utensil that needs to be cleaned first and immediately before using it again.

If not daily, then the machine needs a thorough cleaning at least once a week.

Fret not. The in-built cleaning programs helps a lot in regular cleaning.

2.9 Which cleaning products should I use for a fully automatic coffee machine?

Use cleaning products suggested by manufacturer or cheaper alternatives containing the same ingredients as the branded product. Household remedies should be avoided if you do not know exactly what you are mixing and how the mixture will react. For example, citric acid is ideal for cleaning a kettle, but it can be too aggressive for use in a fully automatic machine.

2.10 Why do soy milk and other non-dairy milk form clumps in my coffee machine?

These are not lumps but flakes that arise when non-dairy milk has a different temperature than the coffee itself. This happens due to the different compositions of plant-based milk. These flakes or lumps mainly occur with ready-to-use plant-based milk containing sugar and other additives. Sugar-free alternatives or homemade versions hardly from the clump.

2.11 Why automatic milk frothing system doesn’t work with non-dairy or milk alternatives?

This happens due to the different compositions. Such milk type has large, dissolved particles that can clog the narrow tubes and parts, blocking the machine and resulting in disastrous milk froth. If you use plant-based milk in an automatic milk foam system, then sieve it several times before use because without that, if you do frothing, you cannot avoid a thorough cleaning.

The best option here is to use a separate milk frother.

3.1 How to clean a fully automatic coffee machine?

There are various parts in a fully automatic coffee machine that needs proper cleaning. Let’s find out how can you clean each component in the best way possible.

 • Brew Group

Take the removable brew group out of the appliance every day, rinse it thoroughly under warm water without using any cleaning agents.

For a non-removable brew group, cleaning tablets are the only solution.

 • Bean Container

Coffee and espresso beans can make the bean container very oily, quickly turning rancid if left in the bean compartment. The best solution is to avoid putting too many coffee beans in the reservoir to use them up quickly.

For cleaning, empty the bean container, then simply wipe it dry with a paper towel to absorb any remaining oils and odours. Avoid using chemical products so as not to affect the taste of the next batch of coffee beans.

 • Coffee Grounds Container and Drip Tray

These two parts can be easily cleaned under warm water. Most of the time, they are dishwasher safe, so that makes your job eave easier.

 • Water Tank

A water tank is not a home of coffee residues but algae formation and sediments from the water. Rinse the water tank well with warm water and then dry it before refilling it.

 • Grinder

Disassembling the mill is easy. You can remove the copies with a click and twist mechanism, especially the large parts. Then, you can thoroughly clean it under the tap.

If disassembly sounds quite a work, get cleaning tablets, but they are not equivalent to manual cleaning.

The grinder doesn’t demand daily cleaning. You can clean it once a month with regular use or twice a month with intensive use.

Note: For some parts, you run the risk of invalidating the warranty by disassembling them. Therefore, always use the instruction manual when disassembling things.

3.2 How to descale a fully automatic coffee machine?

Limescale is released every time the water is heated in the appliance. The higher the water hardness, the higher the lime content and the faster the scale builds up. This can block the pipes and the mechanics in the long run. To avoid this, descaling is required. Some models come with a descaling program, and also they remind you that it is time for descaling once you have set the water hardness.

If your coffee machine doesn’t have a descaling program or doesn’t remind you of the same, descale at least once a month with average use and unless the tap water is very hard.

For the descaling and descaling agent, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.
